Language Learning Articles

German is spoken by 100 million people worldwide, and is a respected language in business, the sciences, and the arts. The German language is the second most used language on the Internet, with English being the first?

There are many reasons and benefits to learning German. There are many cultural and historical reasons to visit Germany, and German speaking countries like Switzerland or Austria. Oktoberfest and Bavaria are only two of many well known destinations or events. While those spring to most peoples' minds first, just think about all the other superb events and locations that are associated with Germany

Because the origins of German are shared with English, English speakers have an advantage when learning to speak German. Many English words derive from German, like Frankfurter, or professor. That is not true in all cases, so you can get tripped up if you assume that all words which look the same have the same meaning.

Book publishing is huge for Germany. Germany publishes one out of every ten books in the world. As an innovative nation, it is at the leading edge of technology, and ranks third in the world for patent applications. Despite their size relative to the USA, they are also the world’s largest exported most years.

The last paragraph makes the Germans seem like a hard-working, productive nation. This is true, but only half of the story, as Germany is the largest spender of tourist dollars - probably thanks to the generous 6-week vacation time that each German worker earns. Accordingly, there is no part of the world where you will not come across German speakers.

The most widely used language in Europe is German. Because German is wrongly perceived as trickier to grasp than other languages, there is a quite a snob appeal attached to learning it. This is something of a myth, especially since the spelling reform in 1998, a government mandated initiative which significantly reduced the number of spelling and grammar rules governing the language.

But at the same time, the Germans are a very precise race, and are less likely to show patience for bad pronunciation and lack of vocabulary – not because of any bad feeling, simply because they value precision and exactness very highly.

If all you think of German heritage is beer and Lederhosen, then you are far short of the mark. Germany's cultural heritage is vast. Freud and Einstein were German. Germany is the birthplace of nearly all the significant composers of classical music (although they did give us Nena and her 99 red balloons also). Studying the German language truly can give an insider view to German culture in its many aspects.

Learning German is easier today than even. First, with the simplification of the rules, it is less complicated. Second, there are many well-developed on line programs which make grasping basic German and then expanding it very achievable.

The author operates a language website, and you are invited to review his Learning German recommendations. Also, feel free to enroll for a FREE 6-Day German On Line Course.
